History of Siesta Cocktail
Siesta was concocted by bartender Katie Stipe at NYC’s Flatiron Lounge (circa 2016). It’s a refreshing tequila cocktail in the “Campari family.” The recipe blends blanco tequila with fresh lime, grapefruit juice, a touch of Campari, and simple syrup. Although it resembles a tequila sour, it’s notable for containing Campari – making it a tequila-forward cousin to the Hemingway Daiquiri (with Campari standing in for Maraschino). As one recipe notes simply, “You won’t be sorry with tequila, grapefruit, and Campari”.
Ingredients
- 2.0 oz blanco tequila
- ¾ oz fresh lime juice
- ¾ oz simple syrup (1:1)
- ½ oz Campari
- ½ oz fresh grapefruit juice
- Lime wheel (for garnish)
Instructions for Siesta Cocktail
- Shake: Add tequila, lime juice, simple syrup, Campari, and grapefruit juice to a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for about 20 seconds until well chilled.
- Strain: Strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass.
- Garnish: Garnish with a lime wheel.
Food Pairing with Siesta Cocktail
The Siesta’s zesty-citrus and light bitterness make it a superb match for spicy and grilled fare. Pair it with Mexican dishes like grilled shrimp tacos or carnitas; the agave in tequila complements the grilled meats, while citrus cuts the spice. It’s also a fun match for tequila-based appetizers (e.g. guacamole and chips) or fresh ceviche. In summer months, try it with grilled pineapple salsa or a spicy salad – the drink’s brightness will refresh the palate.
